Currently based in Berlin, Katharina Grosse (German, born 1961) studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Grosse’s approach to painting is not limited by the traditional rectilinear proportions of the canvas or even the architectural margins of the wall mural. She uses a spray gun and compressor to install her work on building exteriors or within interior spaces. Throughout her process, equal treatment is given to such surfaces as pieces of furniture as it is to floors, walls, and ceilings. The paint gun functions as an extension of Grosse’s body, thus her work is created in tandem with her own physical movement while painting.
In 2010 Grosse created the monumental installation One Floor Up More Highly at Mass MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts. She has had other recent solo exhibitions at the Neues Museum in Nürnberg, and the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, among others. From 2000 to 2010 Grosse taught at the Art Academy in Berlin/Weissensee. Since 2010 she has served on the faculty of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
