    In Memoriam: William Christenberry

    December 5–27, 2016

The iconic Southern photographer William Christenberry passed away on November 28, 2016 in Washington, DC. The High Museum of Art’s collection contains 140 of Christenberry’s prints, 16 of which were on view outside of the Greene Family Learning Gallery in his memory.

A pioneer of color photography, Christenberry dedicated his career to articulating the unique character of his native Hale County, Alabama. For four decades beginning in the 1960s, Christenberry photographed the same locations on an annual basis, creating a prolonged study of place and the passing of time. He made the 16 photographs of “Coleman’s Café” on view at the High between 1967 and 1996.
