Soon after her romantic relationship with the photographer and art dealer Alfred Stieglitz blossomed in 1918, Georgia O’Keeffe began to accompany him on visits to his parents’ summer home at Lake George, New York. On her first visit, she was attracted to the canna lilies that bloomed profusely in late summer. The canna’s billowy petals and intense colors inspired O’Keeffe to create a series of paintings that includes this one. Although made early in the artist’s career, the voluptuous curves and delicate blending of colors in this painting foreshadow the artist’s mature works.
