A prominent figure of the so-called American Renaissance, John La Farge excelled in painting and design as well as art criticism and poetry. Snow Storm, painted in Newport, Rhode Island, is representative of the work he did following his studies with William Morris Hunt, the leading Boston artist, teacher, and tastemaker who introduced French Barbizon painting and the “sketch” aesthetic to America.
