Little is known about Louis Remy Mignot. His career in the United States was brief, lasting a scant ten years, off and on, between trips to Europe. During the early 1850s, he was a student of the landscape painter Andreas Schelfhout, one of the founders of the Hague School of Dutch Realism and a celebrated painter of atmospheric winter scenes. This influence seems to have shaped Mignot’s primary concerns as a painter, for winter landscapes suffused in glowing twilight form a significant portion of his oeuvre.
