The late medieval German sculptor Tilmann Riemenschneider was remarkable not only for his technical facility but also for the expressive power of his figures. Saint Andrew appears here as a venerable apostle and diligent servant of Christ, holding the X-shaped cross that is both the instrument and symbol of his martyrdom. The figure’s emotional intensity is fully heightened when viewed from below, as it would originally have been seen by worshippers in a religious setting. Initially polychromed, this piece has lost its coloring but still retains powerful contrasts of light and dark.
