Known for his extravagantly colorful and visually dynamic sculptures called “Soundsuits,” Nick Cave has mades significant contributions to the performance art movement by making connections to Yoruba egungun costumes and the masquerade traditions of Africa. These Soundsuits act as transformative agents, recycling materials and identity and, when worn, transforming the artist himself. In accordance with traditional masquerade practices they function on a spiritual level, simultaneously exposing and concealing the artist’s identity. Overlaid with social, political, and personal implications, this particular piece is rich with cultural reflections and performative implications.
