Julia Margaret Cameron’s photograph of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ewen Hay Cameron (née Annie Chinery), differs from the stiffly posed studio portraits of the time. Taking up photography at the age of forty-eight in 1863, Cameron was among a group of adventurous amateurs who experimented with the difficult photographic process in the first decades of the medium. Many of Cameron’s portraits have a softened, diaphanous quality, including this photograph. She was often criticized for this and other technical limitations, but Cameron ignored her detractors, saying that her goal was to reveal the inner person, not just their outer appearance.
