Krista Thompson, Driskell Prize Winner and Associate Professor of Art History at Northwestern University
In 2003, artist Satch Hoyt, created an art piece of an afro-pick, featuring the iconic clenched black power fist, inlaid with diamonds. The work, From Mau Mau to Bling Bling, speaks to changes in the politics and aesthetics of blackness from the Black Power movements in the 1970s to the present-day emphasis among black youth on bling, on jewelry, on shiny material things.
Through an investigation of the work of leading contemporary artists and black popular photographic practices, Krista Thompson will present what might be described as a post-soul art history, exploring the new meanings of representation and black politics in contemporary society.
This program is free and seating is limited. Seat reservations are required. Tickets are available through the Woodruff Arts Center Box Office at 404-733-5000. Tickets to the Museum are sold separately.
