Matisse is best known as a painter, but he was also one of the most innovative sculptors of the early twentieth century. He was influenced by the sculptures of Antoine-Louis Barye and Auguste Rodin, in addition to African and archaic Greek sculptures. He was able to simplify and contort the human figure into a new expressive sculptural language. Seated Nude, Arms behind Back shows a seated female figure whose feet seem to be melting into the ground. In total, Matisse made eighty-two sculptures, and more than half were completed between 1900 and 1910.
